I look at the boy with the blue eyes—the one who has become my whole world.

His name is Thomas.

He looks exactly like his father, but his personality is the complete opposite. My Tommy is a gentle soul.

His tiny head lays in my lap as his eyes start to close. Next to him, a girl’s freckled face looks up at me with adoration as I sing them a song.

It’s the same one I sing them every night—one about an angel watching over them as they sleep.

It’s the same verse repeated over and over again, but they never get tired of it.

A rush of love for these two children makes me stop singing.

“More,” mumbles Kelsey, even as her own eyes start to close. I stroke the girl’s head fondly.

She’s the apple of my eye. Even though the toddler isn’t my daughter by birth, I raised her like she’s my own.

I resume the song.

I keep singing—letting the love I have for them pour out through the words of the song.

It’s not long before their breathing becomes deep and relaxed.

Thomas is a quiet kid. Kelsey is a wild one.

But when they’re sleeping, the peaceful innocence in both of them is the same. They know that they’re being looked after and taken care of. They rest happily, knowing that there’s always someone to hold them.

I wonder at what age that innocence starts to fade.

I once felt this way too—when I was in Nico’s arms. He held me like I was a child. Like I was his responsibility.

Every single time, he would wait until I fell asleep.

All we had together was a month. But that single month was enough to give me memories to last a whole lifetime.

A broken sigh escapes my lips.

I kiss each of the children on their foreheads and inhale that baby smell deep into my lungs—it always reminds me of sunshine on damp earth.

I carry them to each of their beds, and pull their soft blankets up to their little chins.

A soft knock comes on my door.

I tie my hair back in a ponytail and throw on a cardigan before going over to open the door.

Leo Blackwood.

He nods towards the balcony.

It’s our balcony—the one where we bare our broken souls to each other. He tells me his secrets, and I try to tell him mine.

“Are they asleep?” he asks, nodding at the bedroom.

“Yeah. Kelsey asked for you,” I say.

The girl loves him. She calls me by my name, but Leo’s her ‘dada.’ The baby girl was left on his doorstep a few days after I gave birth to Thomas.

We don’t know who left her there, but she’s been a part of our unconventional little family ever since.

Leo and I are two best friends raising two children together.

When nobody showed up to claim Kelsey, he took her under his wing and became her legal guardian. And since I already live in the West Wing of his estate, I became her nanny.

He takes his usual chair in the balcony, and stares out into the night as if he’s searching for something.
